Roses are red, violets are blue…

Valentine’s Day approaches, that annual festival of love. Named for a third-century priest who helped Roman soldiers to marry when it was forbidden to do so, it’s a time to show that special someone how much you care.

Now, it might seem fairly odd to feel obliged to wax misty-eyed and sentimental simply because the calendar dictates. But, frankly, January always feels such a long month, and Valentine’s Day falls when the first buds are bursting forth, with the promise of longer days hanging in the air – so why not treat someone (or even yourself!) to some gorgeous gardening goodies and enjoy the start of spring?!

Read on for our top picks for gifts this Valentine’s Day.

Sophie Conran for Burgon & Ball heart apple bird feeder

This charming bird feeder looks simply delightful in the garden. At this time of year, after a long winter, our garden visitors need all the help they can get. Our feathered friends enjoy an apple, plum, pear or other soft fruit, and this will serve it up in designer style! In easy-clean powder-coated galvanised steel, with natural leather hanging cord, this feeder will stay looking good in all weathers.

RHS-endorsed rose pruner

Perhaps an unusual tool, but a very useful one, perfect for safe, scratch-free pruning of that most romantic of blooms, the rose. A bypass secateur with razor-sharp high-carbon steel blade, the pruner has a gripping device which locks onto the stem as it closes, holding the stem firmly in place. The stem can then be removed from the plant, and released into trug or barrow without having to ever touch it. Of course, it’s ideal for irritant plants like rue and euphorbia, too – but we prefer the more romantic connotations of the rose!

RHS Gifts for Gardeners British Bloom Trowel & Fork set

A gorgeous gift set of RHS-endorsed trowel and fork, with wooden handles painted in a deep cranberry shade. The trowel is engraved with the Gertrude Jekyll quote, "The love of gardening is a seed once sown, that never dies." The box carries the gorgeous British Bloom design of dahlias and peonies, and is finished with ribbon. They may look lovely, but these are serious garden tools, and carry the RHS lifetime guarantee. A lovely gift for any gardeners, and a thoughtful way to convey your affection.

‘Oak Leaf’ Love The Glove ladies’ gardening gloves

The new design in our popular Love The Glove collection of ladies’ gardening gloves. Marrying form and function, these gloves are packed with high performance design features, including padded palms for protection, a wriststrap to keep out debris, and mesh between the fingers to avoid overheating. Available in Poppy, Navy and Moss, we’ve created these gloves to match the most popular colours in our Kneelo® kneeler and knee pad collection, as well our our Hip-Trug and poc-kit ranges – so it’s easy to put together the perfect gardening gift set!

RHS-endorsed classic pruning knife and steel set

There couldn’t be a more perfect gift for a gardener than this beautiful knife and steel set. Hand crafted in Sheffield with a high-carbon steel blade and scales (handle) in FSC® oak, this knife will last a lifetime. The blade housings are solid brass so they’ll never rust, and the handle will mould to the user’s hand over time. In a presentation gift box with a miniature steel to keep the blade razor sharp, this knife is truly a gift to treasure.

This Valentine’s Day, show your loved one how much you care, with gifts to help love grow.
