It’s coming up to that time of year again, when you want to show your mum how much you appreciate all the innumerable things she does for you - and always has done.
Of course, if you have a green-fingered mum to buy for, the shopping for that special something is made easier by our selection of gorgeous new gardening goodies. And if you're a mum yourself and you’re being asked for suggestions for gifts from the significant other, the children or even the dog, you may care to drop a few subtle hints on what catches your eye, too.
Here are our top five gift ideas for Mother’s Day 2020.
RHS British Bloom pruner & holster set
A high quality RHS-endorsed pocket pruner with a handy (not to mention very lovely) holster to wear on a belt, so it’s always to hand when it’s needed. The holster and gift box feature the bold and beautiful British Bloom design of dahlias and peonies, taken from the RHS Lindley Library of historic botanical art. Unlike some flowery gift sets you may see, this is a full-spec garden cutting tool, with high-carbon steel blade for edge retention and long life, and a full ten-year guarantee. It’s just a littler… prettier than our standard pruners. Presented in a lovely gift box with ribbon, it’s a beautiful and thoughtful gift for the gardening mum who likes to look stylish in the borders.
Sophie Conran long thin trowel
However keen a gardener she is, your mum is unlikely to have one of these. Launched just last autumn, this long thin trowel is exceptionally useful for all kinds of garden jobs, including digging in tight spaces or in containers, weeding (especially for ferreting out those with long tap roots), transplanting, working with seedlings… It’s a real multitasker, and we’re sure every gardener will find their own favoured way of using it. The mirror-polished stainless steel, brass ferrule with maker’s mark, and waxed FSC-certified beech wood handle make it as beautiful as it is useful, and it’s presented in a handsome gift box.
Baby Dotty trio of hanging pots
If your mum, like us, has fallen in love with the hot trend for a jungly home, don’t hang around - the Baby Dotty Trio is the one for her! Our Baby Dotty indoor pot looks just adorable planted up with a tiny succulent, or perhaps a plant to drip over the edge, like a Rhipsalis or String of Hearts. And because these gorgeous little pots look even better in a group, we made this gift-boxed set of three pots, dip-glazed in complementary colours. The natural coastal shades look especially gorgeous in a bathroom, we think. Very jungalow style! Houseplants are in every stylish home at the moment, so even if your mum's not a gardener, she’ll love these.
Love The Glove Oak Leaf gift sets
If your mum’s not a frilly type of gardener, she’ll appreciate a proudly practical gift, and here we’d suggest our Colour Collective. We created our Oak Leaf ladies’ gardening gloves last year in red, blue and moss green, to match the most popular shades of our much-loved Kneelo® ranges of knee pads and garden kneelers. The Kneelo range uses twin layers of memory foam around a lightweight shock-absorbing foam core; they’re the original memory foam kneeler. The Oak Leaf gloves have padded palms for protection, a wrist strap to keep debris out, and breathable mesh to avoid overheating - a fabulous combination of features at a sensible price. Put the two together in our mix’n’match selection, and you can create a personal gift that’s just right for the way your mum likes to garden. What could be more thoughtful?
We hope these ideas provide you with some inspiration, whoever you're buying for. Of course, if you don't have a mum of your own to spoil, it’s lovely to take the initiative and do something lovely for another special lady. Some flowers for a neighbour, perhaps? A photographer friend of ours offers a free portrait session to a older lady each Mother’s Day to celebrate the memory of her own wonderful mum, which we think is a beautiful idea. So if you know a gardening mum, even if she's not your own, why not surprise her this year?
However you spend this Mother’s Day, we hope you enjoy it with someone very special to you. Have a wonderful day - and let's hope for some spring sunshine!
